Valles Canyon in the Uvas Mountains

Join NMSU geologist Dr. Brian Hampton on a two-mile round-trip hike in Valles Canyon, a little known treasure in the heart of the Uvas Mountains. He’ll explain the geology as we walk up an arroyo past Native American rock art and bedrock mortars. The drive is roughly one hour each way, with the final two miles on a very rough, unmaintained dirt road. One particularly steep hillside with a precipitous drop-off is not for the faint of heart. High clearance vehicles with four wheel drive are required. If you don’t have four wheel drive we may be able to accommodate you because we will be carpooling. RATING: Moderate to strenuous. (Hike #14 in SWEC’s hiking guide.)

Advanced reservations are required. Space is limited. For more information and to register, please contact (575) 522-5552 or ashley@wildmesquite.org
