Write a letter to the editor voicing your support for Mexican wolves. Writing a letter to the editor of your local newspaper is an excellent way to raise awareness about the Mexican gray wolf situation. It shows public officials that you support the restoration program and expect that they will, too.

Consider these talking points:

• Mexican wolves are top predators and play an important role in maintaining the balance of nature in Southwestern ecosystems.
• There were only 42 Mexican wolves in the wild at the end of 2009--the lowest number in seven years, making it one of the most endangered animals on earth. Immediate action is needed to prevent the extinction of the Mexican wolf in the wild for a second time.
• Mexican wolves need a new recovery plan. The current plan is 28 years old, written before the principles of modern conservation biology were developed and lacking numerical goals for defining recovery.

Body: * I have been pleased to see many of the recently featured articles on Mexican wolves that have brought attention to the challenges of unknown murders of wolves and private trapping on public land. Wolves have done their part to thrive again in the southwest - hunting and reproducing successfully in the wild. Human beings are the single greatest threat to wolves becoming extinct a second time in the wild. We need to protect this valuable public resource to the greatest extent possible. Federal authorities know that they need to do: replace the recovery plan from the 80’s, release more wolves into the wild, and bring those killing wolves to justice. Despite clear needs they continue to dawdle away time. How many more wolves must be murdered or lose legs in privately set traps for them to act?
