More than 400 people from across the Southwest gathered last Saturday in the desert heat to protest new border wall construction in southern New Mexico. Attendees listened to speakers and musicians before marching to the site where 20 miles of existing wildlife-friendly vehicle barriers are being replaced with 18' steel bollard wall west of Santa Teresa.

Trump's border wall IS being built

Newly installed border "wall" (back) next to existing vehicle "barrier" that is being "replaced." The new wall is nothing like the barrier it is replacing. This is new border wall.

SWEC's executive director Kevin Bixby spoke about the harm the wall will do to wildlife and habitats, as well as its contribution to the continuing militarization of border communities. The project is the Trump Administration's first major success in putting new wall along the U.S./Mexico border. Montana-based Barnard Construction has received a $72 million contract to do the work. Funding was approved by Congress in the 2017 Omnibus budget.

The event was organized by SWEC, NM CAFe, ACLU, Sierra Club, Center for Biological Diversity and Defenders of Wildlife. See more photos on our Facebook page.
