Can protected natural areas like Otero Mesa create jobs?


You can learn more at a forum on Saturday, Sept. 18, 2010 in Alamogordo, NM at the NMSU Tays Center (click here for a map) 6-9 pm. You’ll hear local and national leaders discuss how communities in the West take advantage of their nearby protected public lands to create jobs and economic opportunity through tourism, job recruitment, outdoor businesses, marketing natural areas, hunting, outdoor recreation, and birding.

Speakers include NM Senator Steve Fischmann (keynote speaker); Ben Alexander, Headwaters Economics Institute; and more. Hear from Susan Hand, owner of an outdoor equipment store in Utah whose business took off after the Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument was designated. Listen to Ray Hatch, former mayor of Taft, California describe how his community has been positively affected by the nearby Carizzo Plain National Monument.
