A busy week for wolf supporters!
Come to the Center on the 24th at 6pm to
Learn more about the current Mexican wolf situation
Lobos at the Crossroads--Tuesday, 8/24, 6 pm
Will the 12-year effort to restore endangered Mexican wolves to the Southwest succeed, or will it be sabotaged by illegal killing and political interference? Come to the Southwest Environmental Center on Tuesday, August 24 at 6 pm to learn more about the current situation. SWEC’s Field Organizer Paul Heiberger will give a presentation covering the history of wolves in the Southwest from the Pleistocene through the period following the Civil War, when wolves became the number one enemy of ranchers following the slaughter of the wolves’ natural prey, and the importation of large herds of cattle. He’ll talk about the federal government’s changing role in the Mexican Wolf story, from efforts to exterminate wolves to the current reintroduction program. He’ll describe current threats to wolves, such as trapping, illegal shootings and misguided management policies, and what you can do to ensure the Mexican wolf’s survival.
The event is free and open to the public. Contact paul@wildmesquite.org for more information.
Celebrate your Love of Lobos in
Albuquerque on the 27th and 28th
The Southwest Environmental Center, WildEarth Guardians, the Sierra Club, and Animal Protection of New Mexico are all sponsoring the inaugural Lobo Lover award ceremony in advance of an important NM Game Commission meeting. Join us for food, fun, and a presentation of the first ever Lobo Lover award to Gov. Bill Richardson.
The award ceremoney and rally will be Friday, August 27, 6-8 pm Harwood Art Center, 1114 7th Street NW, Albuquerque. There will be refreshments, cake and the presentation of the first annual lobo lover award to Governor Bill Richardson. Help us spread the word by printing copies of this flyer!
After rallying to support Mexican wolves and all the Governor Richardson has done to protect them join us the following day for an important New Mexico Game Commission meeting. The trapping ban within the Mexican wolf recovery area is on the agenda and anti-wolf groups are calling the ban "another attack on private property rights" - despite the fact that the ban is on our federal public land. We know that these groups will be out in force and we need you to show up in support of wolves. Just being a member in the crowd with wolf shirt or sign would help to drown out those that would be happy to see wolves go extinct in the wild a second time. If you're interested in speaking contact Paul@wildmesquite.org , otherwise complete details are below.
New Mexico's Game Commission meeting on Saturday, August 28, 2010 will be at the Marriott at I-40 and Louisiana at 9AM. You can find a copy of the complete agenda here. Please note that the wolf item will be during the afternoon and that will be when we need the most support!
